What Makes a Great Potting Shed
What is a Potting Shed
In its truest form, a potting shed is a small construction, dedicated solely to gardening activities. However, you don’t really need a separate structure to pot and propagate. You just need a little shelter, some light and a cosy place for your young plants to nurture and grow.
In this article Sheds Direct will discuss what it takes to make a great potting shed.
For the keen gardener, the potting shed is often right at the heart of the garden. It’s where plants get their start, where these plants can be sheltered and nurtured and it’s also where harvests are gathered. Many people associate the traditional potting with the coming of spring by sowing seeds, growing cuttings and planting out the summers flowers and harvests. This shed style is the shelter from summer heat or sudden rainstorms, and where people plan their gardening activities, schedules and a place to relax after a fulfilling day in the garden.
One you have decided upon a installing a potting shed the next task is to consider it’s function, purpose and layout.
The Layout of your Potting Shed
The ideal layout should have the space and functionality of 3 distinct areas, a work area, a storage area and a relaxing area. Windows are always a welcome addition to any enclosed shed, especially if they overlook the garden and offer welcome sunlight. Windows can offer additional benefits of good lighting which is a must for any potting shed.
Lighting Your Work area
A combination of natural and artificial lighting can offer the best of both worlds, natural lighting on those sunny days and artificial lighting when the sun is not so bright to help you with the intricate details of pruning and seeding. An inexpensive fluorescent or artificial light installed over your worktable is especially nice on those dark, rainy days or when your work extends beyond daylight hours.
Storage in your potting shed
It’s tough to imaging a potting shed without an array of pots and soil. Since storage space is always at a premium, these pots and bags often find a home on the floor. If you’re really going to use a potting shed and not just as a storage room, you must have a potting bench, the ideal bench should be built at a comfortable standing height. If you are going to be standing for extended periods simply adjust the height of the bench to accommodate a chair or stool.
Having some shelves to store tools and perhaps a radio and your reference books will help to organise the potting shed just the way you want it.
Heavy Duty Potting Shed
The potting shed is an investment, an investment in the future of your garden, plants and shrubs. It’s a place to relax and should be a place that will stand the test of time. Sheds Direct build two types of quality potting shed, we build a heavy duty potting shed and we create the super heavy duty potting shed, each shed is designed and built how our customers want them.

3 Sheds Direct’s Tips to getting the best from your Garden workshop this summer
Are you the proud owner of a great quality Garden Workshop this summer?
Having access to your own garden garden workshop in summer opens up the opportunity to get the best from your outdoor living space.
In the UK most people tend to use their garden workshop as one of 3 different activity types:
- 1. Extra Storage
- 2. Extra Living Space
- 3. Extra Workspace
Some Garden Workshops can be used as a combination of the above, storing and working, plants and projects or the elusive man cave.
Sheds are popular in June 2015 the Shed of the year was trending with over 2.1 million viewers almost as popular as top gear.
Anyway we digress, to have a quality garden shed or garden workshop that gives you the years of enjoyment, all you need is a desire and a few tips to keep the dream alive. First off you will need a Garden Shed or garden workshop….
The 3 Tips To Getting Best Garden Workshop In The Yard
- 1. First of all, you need to make up your mind on how you would make use of the available space within the garden to create the great garden shed that gives you the best use of space and ultimately the pleasure you want from your shed consider the location.Try not to obstruct existing buildings, borders and boundaries while building the garden shed, you will need to clearly and carefully make measurements of the area that you want to position the shed and create the garden building in the dimensions you planned.
- 2. You have to make up your mind to add greenhouse, a bar, seating or work space to your garden workshop. If you are cultivating plants, you will have to ensure to make use of the portion that has access to direct sunlight. Greenhouse gains a lot of positive impact when it gets good quantity of sunlight. The efficiency of this greenhouse is dependent on the amount of sunlight that hits the roof of the building. The greater the quantity and quality of direct sun, the greater the efficiency you are going to have here too.Security can also be a concern, especially if you are storing valuable items, inventions or tools, make sure the design includes a sturdy door and walls.
- 3. Making sure you have the right quality construction, sturdy roof and flooring can never be under valued. Imagine storing items easily damaged by the great British weather and along comes a strong wind that takes the roof off your shed, exposing the stored items and creating damage. Many people also use a shed to store garden equipment, motor cycles and quad bikes etc. Having a sturdy floor ensures the shed can take the weight.
There are really many other things you have to put into consideration when constructing your garden shed. These considerations should be based on what you have in mind.
Ensure you have a great plan and try to make the best decision on what you will have.
Finally, you have to take into consideration some things like how much the shed will impact on to the surrounding where you grow your plants when they are built close to the garden.
If you have a project that involves a new quality built garden shed then you really should talk to Sheds Direct, at Sheds Direct we are passionate about garden sheds and we are always happy to help you out, feel free to call us on 01405 765400

The Benefits Of A Wooden Garden Workshop
Do You Know The Benefits Of A Wooden Garden Workshop
If you are considering putting up a workshop in your garden you might be torn between installing a metal workshop and a wooden garden workshop. When looking at your choices you should consider the benefits that a wooden garden workshop offers. Some of these benefits might swing your decision in favour of the wooden structure.
Planning Permission For a Garden Shed
What many people do not consider when looking at building a workshop is planning permission. If you are going to build a concrete or metal structure you might have to get planning permission first. One of the benefits of wooden workshops is that you almost certainly do not need to have planning permission as the structure does not require a foundation.
The Aesthetics
As your workshop will be part of your garden you want to ensure that it is pleasing to look at. Many people find that wooden workshops are more pleasing to have than metal ones. One of the benefits of wooden structures is that they can be finished in a way that suits your garden. You can paint or stain the wood to match the overall feel of the location.
Ease Of Installation
Wooden garden workshops are usually much easier to install than their metal, plastic or concrete counterparts. In fact, many of the structures are sold as DIY projects which helps you save money on the installation. If you do not want to install the workshop yourself then some suppliers such as Sheds Direct will install your garden workshop for you on the day of delivery. The installation is also very quick so you would not have to wait to use the workshop.
Wood Is A Natural Insulator
Insulation might not be the first thing on your mind when looking at garden workshops. However, if you are going to be spending large amounts of time in the workshop you should know that wood is a natural insulator. During winter the inside of the workshop will be warmer than one made from metal or concrete.
Easy To Replace Wooden Shed Parts
An important benefit of wooden workshops is the ease of replacing parts. If a panel in the wall has been damaged it is very easy to just replace that single panel. It is also easier to maintain wood as you can buy sealants and Preserve the Shed Life with Tanalised wood.
While it is easy to replace parts of a wooden workshop if the wood is cared for correctly you would not need to worry about this for a long time. Wooden workshops can easily stand teh test of time and last for many years before you need to replace any of the structure.
There are a number of benefits that wooden garden workshops have over their metal and concrete counterparts. These benefits include ease of installation and replacement of parts, a lack of planning permission needed and the fact that wood is a natural insulator.
Who Buys a wooden Garden Workshop
Garden sheds are no longer the domain of the male, many of our female customers purchase garden workshops also to peruse their hobbies.

Heavy Duty Garden Shed Base Tips from Sheds Direct
How to build a Heavy Duty Garden Shed Base
In this article Sheds Direct provide general advice on laying a heavy duty garden shed base
Having a solid heavy duty garden shed base is all about creating the right foundations for your garden shed or workshop, spending a little time creating the right approach to solid, firm and level foundations will ensure your new heavy duty garden shed or workshop sits secure for many years to come
Generally speaking, there are commonly 4 different types of base you can use for your heavy duty garden shed base, these are:
- a timber frame base (also known as a portabase)
- a plastic base
- a paved area base, and
- a concrete slab base
To start with a firm, level base should be the goal for any shed or garden storage building. Without this the structure is likely to be assembled on an uneven surface and the Garden Shed may not be level – screw holes will not line up correctly, doors may not fit their doorways and the practical look and feel of your heavy duty garden shed could be impaired.
There are a number of different options to create the necessary flat and level surface, and we’re going to take you through four of them. All are ideal to prevent water collecting around the shed base and damaging the wooden structure of your shed
Building a shed base can be heavy going and very labour intensive, make sure you have access to skills and resources needed before you start the Heavy Duty Garden Shed base laying project. Neither of the paved or concrete bases can be laid straight onto soft ground and will require a sub-base structure first to firm the ground. A concrete base also has a further extra step – constructing the frame or edging that supports concrete while it sets, this is known as formwork. So do bear in mind that these options can take longer to build than the timber frame and plastic bases.
Before you begin constructing your heavy duty garden shed take time to consider a few things about your shed base.
Planning permission
Sheds are generally classified as temporary structures so you won’t usually need planning permission unless you live in a conservation area. But for more information on the up-to-date legislation, check the Government’s Planning Portal website.
Access
You will need access to all sides of the shed during construction and to apply an external paint, stain or varnish if your shed is made of wood. So ensure your base isn’t built too close to walls or fencing (these might also need easy access for maintenance).
Electrical supply
If you have plans to add electricity to your shed, make sure you consult with a qualified electrician before building the base.

How to Organise an untidy Garden Shed
Do you own an untidy garden shed?
Now that summer is here its time to get the most from your Garden shed, your sanctuary and you little piece of solitude in a busy home, in this article sheds direct look at how to organise an untidy garden shed
Its time to start clearing away all that winter clutter and get organised, open the garden shed doors and know exactly where everything is.
Sheds Direct would like to offer some top tips on how to organise a messy shed, whether it be one of our simple garden sheds or a dutch barn or a garden workshop.
- Firstly, empty your shed. You can start to organise your items as you take them out, so wait for a clear dry day before you take everything out. While you are removing everything from your shed, throw out anything you know you will no longer have a use for – it will free up space in your shed. If it looks like it is going to rain while you are emptying it, get a tarpaulin ready to cover your belongings.
- Once your shed (or sheds as the case may be) are empty, check them out for any damage from water or pests. If you notice something that doesn’t look right, Sheds Direct can help you out. You’ll want to be looking for signs of water entry, damage, making sure all chemicals are sealed.
- Storing tools can be a messy job. Store tools that aren’t used often in a box or crate, and often used items on hooks or shelves.
- Messy sheds often are the result of not enough room. If you don’t have enough space to store everything, it might be time to upgrade to a dutch barn or purchase a second shed. Sheds Direct can help you with what you need for your new shed.
Now comes the sorting time – it’s time to put items back into your shed. But how to organise them so you don’t end up with the same mess you started with. You could install shelving in your shed to give you more off-the-ground space, or install peg board to hang things on. Alternatively, you could hang hooks for heavier items and Velcro straps for lighter items. Some of our past customers have come up with some other great ideas including hanging a shoe rack on the wall to store lighter items, install overhead storage racks to store heavier, less used items, or use a length of rigid plastic piping attached to brackets to help store garden stakes, fishing rods or other long narrow items.
If you find your current garden shed is too small for your needs, give Sheds Direct a call on 01405 765 400. Our qualified staff can help you in picking your next shed design to ensure you have enough room for everything.
We would love to see you socially, why not visit our Facebook pages and see some of the great customer comments https://www.facebook.com/shedsdirect.net/
