5 people you never thought would have a garden shed

Tuesday, 10 June 2014 by Mohsin

dutch-barn-a

Would you believe many famous people wouldn’t be where they are without their garden shed? Well – truth is, garden sheds have played a big part on many famous people’s lives. Here we explore just five such famous people.

Roald Dahl wrote in his garden shed

Roald Dahl was one of the most influential and exciting authors around. He has delighted us with his fantastical tales. What you may not know is that he spent a lot of time in his garden shed . For hours on end too. He told his children, as well as his grandchildren, that he kept wolves in his garden shed. Why? Because he wanted to be able to get away without being disturbed. Next time you read James and the Giant Peach – just think it was a result of having somewhere to go.

Rodger Waters created music in his garden shed

A garden shed is a very creative place. Rodger Waters, from Pink Floyd, regularly used his shed to create and write music. He even created a lot of the demo tracks for the album ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ in his garden shed in Islington.

Benjamin Britten composed in his garden shed

Benjamin Britten was one of the most important composers of the 20th century. He wrote most of his music within his garden shed outside his house in Sussex. He composed pieces such as “Death in Venice” and “Phaedra” in his garden shed . It makes you think. One of the most iconic composers got his inspiration from something as basic as a garden shed. What might you be able to get up to in your shed?

Sarah Beeny is a fan of garden sheds

Sarah Beeny is a well known property developer. She is a regular judge at the prestigious ‘Shed of the Year’ competition – for over six years now. She is always talking about how garden shed are a great addition to any home. She says “a shed is a brilliant inexpensive way of adding some extra space to your home”.

Vic Reeves escapes to his garden shed

Living up to a comedian title 24/7 is tiring. Vic Reeves uses his garden shed to “take some time out to escape for an hour or two”. He even admitted that he had no less than five sheds in his garden, that’s a lot of garden sheds! Maybe he has a garden workshop , dutch barn , apex shed, pent shed and a potting shed from Sheds Direct! Garden sheds are somewhere to relax, be creative and get away from the world. We can see that even famous people need somewhere to get away. What better place to do it than in a garden shed? We are not saying you’re going to become famous as soon as you get a garden shed. But who knows what inspiration you may gain simply by taking some time out.Hopefully we’ve provided some insight into the potential of your garden shed.

If you have questions about what type of garden shed you want to buy, delivery or construction then please call Kevin at Sheds Direct or one of the team on 01405 765 400.

The five most unusual uses for a garden workshop

Tuesday, 10 June 2014 by Mohsin

The Five Most Unusual Uses for a Garden Workshop

It’s expected that when you get a garden workshop you’ll be using it for something productive. But have you ever thought about the other possibilities you could have with a garden workshop? In this article I’m going to write about the weird and wonderful things that can be done (or imagined) with a garden workshop . Prepare to be amazed.

Garden Workshop as a Dance Studio

Has the phrase dance workshop ever crossed your vocabulary? Although the phrase has a different meaning, you could use a garden workshop as a dance workshop, clever right? That doesn’t mean you have to have 20-30 people in your shed learning to dance, it could just be yourself. Size doesn’t have to matter; creativity comes from your mind and not from a shed .

Garden Workshop as a Smoke House

There are many who have used their garden workshop to smoke an assortment of meat and fish. It’s a great idea if you love smoked meat. If your shed is small it could still be of significant use to you! Previous knowledge would probably be ideal as fire and wood is never a good mix. Never the less, it’s still a weird yet brilliant idea.

Garden Workshop as a Sauna

This idea is for those of you that like to live the high life and pamper yourself. A sauna is a lovely place to relax and de stress. Imagine having one in your own shed? As unrealistic as it may be, Big Brother had one so why can’t you? Let’s forget about the cost and think about the possibility. You could bring your friends round to relax, rent it out to people and most importantly use it for yourself and your family. Everyone would be amazed by your beautiful skin and shocked when they open your shed to find a lovely hot sauna.

Garden Workshop as a Gym

Going to the gym is unappealing for many reasons. Getting sweaty in front of people you’ve never met before, paying over the odds for the mountain of fees and deposits and working really hard only to realise you’re lifting the lightest weight there is. It all makes having a gym in a garden workshop that more tempting. Having a weight here and a treadmill there meaning you’ve got a great place to sweat in peace away from the super fit gym junkies.

Garden Workshop as a Ice Rink

Ok, so this one is quite outrageous. Going to the ice rink is a rare occurrence as the cost is usually high and it’s always packed with pros making you feel bad for being awful. Yes it probably wouldn’t be any cheaper to turn your garden workshop into an ice rink but it’s a possibility. Imagine coming home from work and having a quick skate on your own personal ice rink, how cool would that be? You’d never have to pay for your kids birthday parties again; even more, you could keep all your frozen food on there and save on your freezer. So you’ve heard of 5 weird and wonderful ideas for your garden workshop. Got any more? Let us know we’d love to be amazed by your ideas. If you have questions about what type of garden shed you want to buy, delivery or construction then please call Kevin at Sheds Direct or one of the team on 01405 765 400.

5 tips to get your garden shed ready for summer

5 tips to get your garden shed ready for summer

Summer is coming and your garden shed needs some work! With these 3 tips you’ll be able to get your garden shed ready and make sure that your shed is setup and looking pretty for summer. There’s not long left so get started.

1 – Give your garden shed paint!

Your shed doesn’t have to be the Mona Lisa to look great. Pick a colour you like (or two!) and give it a couple of coats. It’s that easy! You’ll be surprised how good it will make your garden shed look. You don’t have to go for an outlandish colour; staining it brown always works well. Being creative with how you paint your garden shed or Dutch Barn can really make it stand out. New and exciting colours really add vibrancy to your garden. In fact you might be forgiven for thinking that your garden shed has transformed into a beach hut!

2 – Clear your garden shed out

Most people’s garden sheds and garden workshop are full of stuff they haven’t used in ages, making it hard to get to your summer gear and gardening tools. Why don’t you throw/give it away or sell those unwanted items? Tidy it up so it can be used for the summer. If anything else it makes more space to store more things. Suggestions for what to clear out from your garden shed include; the paddling pool that hasn’t been used in ten years, the old washing machine motor you were convinced you’d need one day… the size 3 roller blades when your daughter is now off out in town with size 5 heels.

3 – Build decking around your garden shed

If you want to make the most of your garden this summer why not add decking? Decking is a great way of enjoying the summer sun. Why not add it to the front of your garden shed to give an extra use to it? Then you can store all your BBQ and summer equipment close by so it’s easily accessible. If your summer is looking pretty empty it would be a great project to keep yourself busy.

4 – Check your garden shed is secure

Often gardens sheds are easy targets. They area easy to break into and often contain valuables such as tools, the lawn mower and bicycles. So some quick steps to secure your garden shed include; Ensuring the door is padlocked when not in use The windows are secure Valuables such as bikes or tools are out of sight – I.e. throw a blanket or plastic sheet over stuff. It makes it look like your shed is full of rubbish rather than that new road bike. In reference to bikes – it’s worth locking the bikes inside your shed too. Use a heavy chain or heavy duty lock through the frames meaning it’s not worth a robber’s time to try and get your Chris Boardman bike!

5 – Check your garden shed for leaks

Tell tale signs of leaks in your shed will be stained flooring or stained walls. Here at Sheds Direct we ensure that the roof is fitted with heavy grade felt meaning no such problems. But if you bought your garden shed from a cheaper shop it’s likely your roof will start to leak. You can patch your shed, but, it’s probably easier to rip off what you have and reroof your garden shed with a better felt. Or of course, maybe look at getting a quality shed next time! We can advise you on your garden shed – call Kevin, Kris or one of the team on 01405 765400.

Dutch barns – the king of garden sheds

Wednesday, 28 May 2014 by Mohsin

Dutch barns – the king of garden sheds

Here at Sheds Direct we are somewhat proud of our dutch barns. We are selling more and more quality dutch barns to customers across the UK. Not only do we manufacture them here in Yorkshire, but we deliver and construct at your home at a time that’s convenient to you. And we love doing it. So here’s our five top reasons dutch barns are the king of garden sheds.

dutchbarn

1 – Dutch barns size

Size is important when buying a garden shed – and dutch barns are a great size. The ratio of width to height is almost perfect. This makes them great for using as a social space or craft workshop. They stand out from other sheds because they have great head room, so no more bumping your head when getting in and out. Truthfully dutch barns can fit in small spaces (check our Facebook page for more photos) – but they come to life when they become the focus of a beautiful garden. And we specialise in building custom dutch barns to your size and specification.

2 – Dutch barns strength and agility

When buying a garden shed you want to make sure that it is still standing years later. Many of our customers have bought from cheap high street stores or cheap online stores. The old adage of you get what you pay for rings true here. Sheds Direct build Garden Sheds, dutch barns and garden workshops that will stand the test of time. Our dutch barns are quality, durable and strong. We build our own dutch barns in Yorkshire and deliver UK wide. We guarantee our quality, and their strength. We often load 1.5 tonnes or more worth of dutch barn and trundle down and round the M25 and London. We put blood sweat and tears in. But we love the smile on your face when your new dutch barns brings instant strong beauty to your garden.

3 – Dutch Barns Usability

Dutch barns are extremely adaptive. Because we manufacture and build larger dutch barns as well as small ones we get a size to meet your needs. Larger structures means you create an area that suits you. This makes it easy to make it comfortable and specific to you; unlike any other shed. Just make sure you get quality. The frame, tongue and groove thickness (you need 20mm), the roof timbers all matter. You don’t want to invest in a cheap dutch barn only to need to replace it in five years. Our dutch barns come with a life long guarantee (provided you look after it).

4 – Dutch Barns Aesthetics

Most people want their garden to look nice but their garden shed, looking worn and unused, is an eyesore. Not so with a dutch barn! Just look at dutch barns on our site – or our Facebook page – they are beautiful! The way the roof slopes brings instant character and beauty to your garden. Adding a coloured roofing felt can make you feel like you are in a different country when you sit outside. We can guarantee your neighbours will pay a visit. Your relatives will be jealous. And your new quality dutch barn will put a smile on your face.

5 – Dutch barn maintenance

Maintenance of sheds is always a key factor when looking to buy. The fear of constantly having to buy paint and replace parts has the potential to put you off. Here at Sheds Direct we ensure that every dutch barn has;

• Tantalised (pressure treated) wood meaning it won’t rot

• The dutch barn frame is far stronger than those you will find on the high street or most other online stores

• The tongue and groove flooring and wall panels are significantly thicker than the competition

• The roofing felt is thicker, significantly thicker.

The result? A strong secure dutch barn. And no to little maintenance. As you’ve probably gathered here at Sheds Direct we specialise in manufacturing, delivering and constructing quality large dutch barns(as well as garden workshops or garden sheds). So get a dutch barn and enjoy it, hassle free and stress free! Send us a picture of your dutch barn; we’d love to see how it looks in your garden. For friendly no nonsense advise call Kevin, Kris or one of the team on 01405 765400.

Garden shed or Garden Workshop Five tips to help you decide

Today typically buyers look for garden shed or a garden workshop. It can be tricky to know which one to choose. A garden shed tends be smaller limiting what you can do. But garden workshops give much more space and flexibility. This article explains when a garden workshop should be chosen over a garden shed.

Garden Workshop vs Garden Shed – Round 1 – No Mess to Depress

Everyone at some point in their life remembers going through a creative phase where they would craft continuously. Material and spare parts left all over the house (to their family’s potential annoyance). Having a garden workshop means that you can leave your tools and spare parts anywhere you like! Unlike a small garden shed where you have to leave room for camping equipment and storage, your garden workshop is yours to do with as you like.

Garden Workshop vs Garden Shed – Round 2 – Your Creative Flare in There

Do you ever get those moments where you just want to be creative? Or want to make something with your hands no matter how it comes out? garden workshops are perfect for this. You will have somewhere to go and test out your artistic flare and relieve some stress. What’s more relaxation is good for the soul. You wouldn’t go sit in a small shed to relax, squeezing in between old tools and furniture, would you?

Garden Workshops vs Garden Shed – Round 3 – Cars, Bikes or Trikes

A garden workshop is great if you have a car, bike or trike. Working in the dry near all your tools means you can focus on having fun and getting the job done. You’ve never tried putting a bike or a car in your garden shed have you? With a garden workshop you can finely tune your vehicle and make it sound sweet in the comfort of your back garden.

Garden Workshop vs Garden Shed – Round 4 – On the Fly DIY

Ever felt that sudden urge to finish all those long, overdue tasks around your house? But opening the garden shed only ends in getting caught under an avalanche of junk? With a garden workshop you don’t need to worry! A garden workshop is a great place to work on projects for your house and store all your tools.

Garden Workshop vs Garden Shed – Round 5, Final Round – Sharing Creativity

It is great building things with people, working to get the best out of each other. With a garden workshop you can create projects with your friends or loved ones. Having somewhere where you can both work makes the whole experience more enjoyable. So get a garden workshop and start a project with your friend, you’ll be amazed what two people can achieve. Has this inspired you to start a project? Or do you already get creative? Send us pictures of what you’re making!

Shed Transformations – 5 Great Ways to Transform Your Old Garden Shed into a Multi-purpose

Friday, 16 May 2014 by Mohsin

Shed Transformations – 5 Great Ways to Transform Your Old Garden Shed into a Multi-purpose

Money is tight. But creating a new space doesn’t have to cost a fortune. With these five ideas you

can give your old Garden Shed a new life so it can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Shed Transformations 1 – The Garden Shed, Social Space

No longer does your garden shed just have to hold garden tools and DIY experiments gone wrong.

Use the space to show off to your friends and family. Use it as a social space! With wood board you

can make an attic-like space to store the tools until summer comes. Wash the floor, paint the walls

even add a picture or two. Now that you have space, make it to your liking; add chairs, a sofa or

even a bar! All you need now are the people.

Shed Transformations 2 – The Garden Shed, Games Room

Make somewhere for your kids to go this summer. Turn your old garden shed into a games room.

Clear away the old junk you haven’t used for years and replace it with a set of board games or even a

pool table. Your kids will love to have a space of their own to share with their friends and you won’t

have to deal with the noise!

Shed Transformations 3 – The Garden Shed, Spare Bedroom

Having the in-laws around can be stressful. There is always an argument when putting your child in

with their siblings and constantly having them around the place are a few of the many stresses. Why

don’t you put then in the shed? Once you’ve made sure the cracks are sealed and you’ve smartened

it up with a bit of paint all you need to do is add a bed, some drawers and a small heater to keep

them warm then you’re good to go! No longer will you have to deal with the in-laws in your face.

Who knew a garden shed would be so handy?

Shed Transformations 4- The Garden Shed, Man Cave

Most men have dreamt about having a space they can call their own away from the rest of the

world. Or even their partners wish they had a space of their own so they wouldn’t make a mess of

the house! Why don’t you restyle your shed into a man cave? Adding comfy seats, bar, fridge and a

TV; the men will never need to leave! Who needs to paint it when they’ll have their eyes glued to the

TV or looking down a pint glass? This is a great and easy way to make the most of your garden shed.

Shed Transformations 5 – The Garden Shed, Wendy House

Everyone remembers being envious of that one friend who had a Wendy house, spending

hours playing, creating a whole new world for yourself. Don’t let your kids be the ones that are

envious! Re-vamp your garden shed into a Wendy house. Move out all the things children can hurt

themselves on and put in bean bags and toys for your children to enjoy. This simple idea can keep

your kids out of trouble and keep their imagination wild, a great way to keep them busy over the

holidays.

Have any of these worked for you? Or have you tried something completely different? Send us a

picture, we’d love to see.

Don’t have a Garden Shed to transform? Or want to start over with a new shed? Take a look at our

great range of garden sheds.

Five exciting uses for dutch barns

Monday, 12 May 2014 by Mohsin

Exciting uses for dutch barns

If you’ve ever seen dutch barns, you will see that a dutch barn is a type of beautiful garden shed. The roof shape gives it a fantastic rustic and characterful aspect. Yet what excitement can be had in a dutch barn?

sheds direct, garden shed, garden sheds, garden workshop, garden workshops, shed, sheds, potting shed, dutch barn, dutch barns, dutch barn sheds, apex sheds, pent sheds, sheds online, sheds direct online, shedsdirect, wooden shed, garden building, garden storage

Here’s five suggestions;

1. Micro brewery in dutch barns

With the explosion in micro breweries in the UK a dutch barn is a perfect place to perfect your hobby. You can keep your beer making equipment out of the house –which saves on smells and creates space. Invite friends over to show them how it’s done – you’ll be the talk of the street. You can label your beer Dutch Barn Ale!

2. Pet keeping in dutch barns

If you have young children, or even older ones, at some point pets are going to be living with you. What better place than dutch barns to keep your little animals safe? Perfect for rabbits, guinea pigs – even chickens! What’s more you keep your garage clean and tidy, and no smells in the house.

3. Famous Five and dutch barns

Remember the Famous Five, or Secret Seven? Enid Blighton’s characters always started an adventure in the garden shed. Why not dutch barns? A secret knock at the door, entry, a smuggled lamp, sweets and a bottle of water – and off they went. Do your children have a secret place from which to roam the world?

4. The entrepreneur and dutch barns

Starting a business can be problematic at the best of time. A key issue is space. Space to work, to think to relax. Time away from the children. From the domestic demands of home. A dutch barn gives you a great working environment. It’s beautifully sitationed in your garden – and once insulated and heated will allow you to work all year round. Your friend’s will be jealous.

Did you know that the founder of £2 million website SpareRoom.co.uk operates from his garden shed (why not a dutch barn?), while property guru Kirstie Allsopp runs her business and writes books in her garden shed.

5. Relaxing in dutch barns

Finally – with all those exciting activities – let’s not forget we need time out to relax too. On long summer days what better place is there to relax? With the door wide open, blue skies streaming in through the large windows, take your garden chair and take time to relax.

Apex shed or pent shed – what’s the difference?

Friday, 09 May 2014 by Mohsin

Apex shed or pent shed – what’s the difference?

Seach for a garden shed online and you will come across the terms apex shed or pent shed. To the unitiated in garden shed design – this can be confusing!

So what’s the difference?

The difference between an apex shed and a pent shed is the number of slopes the roof has.

A Pent Shed

A pent shed has a single slope. The highest point of the roof is one the side of the door (where you walk in). We offer various pent shed styles and pent shed prices.

Pent shed

An Apex Shed

An apex shed has two slopes, like an upside down V. The highest point is down the middle of the shed meanig a tall person can walk from along the length of the shed. We offer various apex shed styles and apex shed prices.

apex Shed

So what’s best? Apex Sheds or Pent Sheds?

As ever, it depends on what you want to use your garden shed for. Here’s three things to consider.

1. Do you plan on working in your garden shed?

In an apex shed you can hang tools or have a work bench down each side of the shed. The higher middle ceiling means you can walk the length of the shed without problems.

In a pent shed, the height is at the door – meaning if you are taller you may struggle to walk to the end of the garden shed

2. Do you plan on using your garden shed for storage?

Either the pent shed or the apex shed will suit your purposes. Again, the apex shed allows easier movement within the garden shed. Some owners of apex sheds also use the roof space for storage (e.g. fishing rods, oars and the like). That said, shelves can be erected around the door in a pent shed for additional storage.

3. Where will you be putting the garden shed?

Think about where you plan om putting your garden shed. Pent sheds may look better next to a wall or fence. An apex shed may look better when positioned in a garden. If you really want a good looking shed, then why not also take a look at our beautiful dutch barns sheds. These have more than two slopes to the roof! A potting shed has a different design again.

We hope you have found this article helpful – if you have questions about the type of garden shed you want to buy, garden shed delivery to your address or garden shed construction then please call Kevin or one of the team on 01405 765 400.

Five steps to buying a garden shed direct

Tuesday, 15 April 2014 by Mohsin

A dutch barn installed for a customer from Sheds Direct

5 steps to buying a garden shed direct

Here are five questions to help you buy a garden shed direct, useful if you are considering buying a garden shed now or in the near future.

sheds direct, garden shed, garden sheds, garden workshop, garden workshops, shed, sheds, potting shed, dutch barn, dutch barns, dutch barn sheds, apex sheds, pent sheds, sheds online, sheds direct online, shedsdirect, wooden shed, garden building, garden storage

1. What size garden shed?

Think for a moment what you use your garden shed for. Many use garden sheds for garden storage – bikes, lawn mowers, BBQs and an assortment of garden tools.

The average size is 6ft x 4ft or 6ft x 6ft. As garden sheds go, this is not big, yet certainly large enough to use for garden storage.

If you plan on using your garden shed as a garden workshop – then will you also use it for storage? If so, think about a larger one. Measure the space you have, and get the largest one you can afford with your budget.

2. What style of garden shed?

If you are looking for character look no further than a beautiful dutch barn shed. Dutch barns are pretty with character roofs yet just as sturdy and will last as long as a normal garden shed.

If you like gardening, and want to protect young plants or frost sensitive ones then think about buying one of our potting sheds. These are built with larger slanted windows to catch the sun, stay warm yet are still great for garden storage.

If you require more space – maybe because you want to spend more time in your garden, check out a garden workshop.

3. Do you need your garden shed delivered?

If you have a very large van with a loading space of at least 8 feet long and at least 6 feet tall you can think of picking up your own garden shed.

For those of us who don’t have such large vans –delivery is required. When buying your garden shed always find out the price to deliver too. We at Sheds Direct deliver UK wide.

4. Do you need help putting up your garden shed?

There are various things you need to think about when constructing your garden shed. The base is very important – and you check here to see how to prepare your garden shed base.

To construct the shed yourself we recommend at least two fit strong adults, some patience plus a range of tools. These include a spirit level, tape measure, driver drill bits, nails, marking knife, claw hammer, rubber gloves, sealant gun and a step ladder. If the wood is untreated we also recommend a good wood preserver and brush.

To reduce the stress call us. We will construct the base and shed professionally. Don’t just take our word for it – check out our garden shed testimonials.

5. Where will you buy your garden shed from?

Do you care where your garden shed was manufactured? Buying online gives you lots of choice – but was it built thousands of miles away? Using slave labour? Has it spent months at sea? Does the wood come from sustainable sources? Have the shed panels been stored in harsh elements over an extended period of time?

At Sheds Direct we are passionate about our garden sheds. We manufacture in North Yorkshire. We use sustainable, tanalised wood. Local craftsmen. Local wages. And we deliver UK wide. What’s more – we offer very competitive prices. Why not call us on 01405 765 400 for a no nonsense quote?

We hope you have found this article helpful – if you have questions about what type of garden shed you want to buy, delivery or construction then please call Kevin at Sheds Direct or one of the team on 01405 765 400.
